Retrofitting Hospital Pillow Speaker Buttons with Braille

A hospital decided that they wanted to make accommodations for their blind patients by updating their current pillow speaker buttons to include braille. Although the customer knew what they wanted to do, they didn’t know how to achieve it; so they turned to Roemer Industries for their expertise.

The hospital needed braille tags to place on top of their existing speaker labels without compromising readability or ease of use. Due to the application and everyday use, the project required a durable material with an aggressive adhesive. Roemer’s Sales and Engineering Teams worked closely with the customer to come up with an idea on how to accomplish this.

Roemer’s solution was to manufacture transparent, polycarbonate overlays with braille printing and adhesive on the backs. These special-shape overlays required fabrication processes that included cutting and embossing. In working with Roemer Industries, the customer was able to keep their original labels intact while becoming ADA compliant.
